Storybook Plan

My storybook will cover the concept of reincarnation, specifically of the avatars are Vishnu and Lakshmi, and of an eternal love between the two throughout time. Each episode will feature different characters, where the first story is about Rama and Sita and the last two stories are about original characters whose stories are set in different periods. Broadly speaking, the first story will take place in the past (same setting as the Ramayana epics), the second story will be set in present day, and the final story is sci-fi and futuristic. Each story will tie together, as I want there to be noticeable growth from the characters in story 1 to those in story 3; without that growth, they would not be able to be free from reincarnation. So, I hope to convey that as clearly as possible. As for an overall message, I feel that when we are younger we see that there is one way to reach your happily-ever-after (like in Disney movies), but happiness and being at peace with yourself comes in many forms. Everyone has the ability to grow into their best self, and you do not need a partner to achieve growth or even love.

First Story:
  • Similar to the plot of the Ramayana, except Rama does not save Sita from Ravana; she dies before he arrives in Lanka.
Second story:
  • Parallels the story of Rama and Sita, except elements of the story are modernized. There are many ways I could do this, but all of the examples I have thought of fall under one general umbrella: an unhappy relationship. I do know that I want the female character to be more independent and strong than Sita was portrayed, and she can take care of herself.
Third Story:
  • I like the idea of one of these characters being self-aware, knowing that he/she is an avatar and is destined for the other; because of the setting, the character may have a computer program within their brain/mind, thus allowing them to know this information. But whether or not he/she does something about that is up in the air. In the end I want these characters to break the reincarnation cycle, but I don’t necessarily think the characters need a traditional happily-ever-after. The ending is about finding peace, even if that means they are not together romantically at the end.
