Reading Notes: Epified Krishna Part B

I really enjoyed this playlist of videos because as the episodes recounted Krishna’s life, I watched a transition from his mischievous childhood to adulthood, where we finally learn (and he learns) about his destiny. Though subtle, I noticed the shift in his attitude and how he matured when he learned of his destiny and went to Mathura to fulfill it, so I really enjoyed seeing that character growth.

Episode 12: Krishna Rides Hastin
  • Summary: Krishna’s older brother bet the cowherds that he could kill Hastin the bull. Hastin was a very violent and aggressive bull, so all the villagers were scared of him. Krishna told his brother not to kill Hastin, that it was a bad idea, and went so far as to claim that in one month he would be able to ride the bull. No one believed Krishna. To prove them wrong and to prove to himself he could, he visited Hastin every night and played the flute for him. As the full moon approached, Hastin became less hostile and calmer. Krishna rode into the village on Hastin, shocking everyone in town. The villagers realized that in his quest to ride the bull, Krishna was teaching them all a lesson on kindness and how showing it to others it is the biggest strength of all.
Episode 13: The Savior of Dharma
  • Summary: Krishna told his mother he wanted to marry Radha, but Yasodha would not allow it. Krishna did not want to listen to his parents, so they took him to see the family priest. The priest told him about his destiny to restore Dharma on earth, and he could not marry Radha for that was not his purpose. Krishna was saddened by this revelation, but he knew he had to follow through, so he did not marry Radha.
Episode 19: Freedom for Mathura
  • Summary: Most in Mathura celebrated after Kansa’s death. As Kansa’s body was being transported, Krishna was reminded of his task to free Kansa’s father (and Krishna’s grandfather) and his birth parents from their cells. He told each of them about Kansa’s death as they left the prison, so it was now safe for them in Mathura. Krishna’s grandfather was crowned the king of Mathura, and Krishna and his brother stayed in Mathura to live under the rule of their new king.
